The water pump circulates coolant between the engine and the radiator, ensuring the engine stays cool. It’s driven by either a timing belt, serpentine belt, or v-belt, and a broken belt can lead to rapid overheating. Over time, the pump’s shaft seal can wear out, causing leaks. Water pumps driven by timing belts are typically replaced during timing belt changes. Additionally, acidic coolant can corrode the impeller, diminishing cooling efficiency. In some cases, plastic impellers may crack, leading to the engine overheating.
