Your dashboard is like your vehicle’s way of texting you. Some messages are urgent, others are gentle reminders—and some are just plain confusing. At Differentials Plus, we believe the more you understand about those glowing icons, the better prepared you’ll be to keep your vehicle safe and reliable.

Before we dive in, keep in mind—this isn’t an exhaustive list. Modern vehicles can display dozens of different warning lights depending on the make, model, and features. Below are some of the most common (and most critical) dashboard warnings you’re likely to encounter.

🚨 Lights You Should Never Ignore

Some warning lights mean pull over immediately—not after you swing through the drive-thru. These lights indicate potentially serious issues that can cause significant damage or compromise your safety:

1. Oil Pressure Light

Icon:  Old-fashioned oil can

  • This light signals dangerously low oil pressure, which means oil isn’t circulating through your engine properly. Possible causes include a failing oil pump, clogged oil filter, or dangerously low oil level. Driving with this light on can cause catastrophic engine damage.

2. Engine Temperature Light

Icon:  Thermometer over wavy lines

  • Indicates your engine is overheating. This can be caused by low coolant, a stuck thermostat, radiator issues, or a failing water pump. Continued driving can warp engine components or cause head gasket failure.

3. Battery/Charging System Light

Icon:  Car battery

  • A sign your alternator may be failing or your battery isn’t holding a charge. Could also indicate corroded battery terminals, a loose belt, or wiring issues. Ignoring it may leave you stranded with a dead battery.

4. Brake Warning Light

Icon:  Exclamation point in a circle or the word “BRAKE”

  • Could indicate low brake fluid, worn brake pads, a malfunction in the braking system, or that your parking brake is still engaged. Any issue affecting your brakes should be addressed immediately.

5. Check Engine Light (Flashing)

Icon:  Flashing engine symbol

  • A flashing check engine light often signals an active engine misfire, which can damage the catalytic converter if left unchecked. Possible causes include ignition coil failure, bad spark plugs, or fuel delivery issues. Stop driving and have it inspected immediately.

⚠️ Lights You Shouldn’t Ignore for Long

These lights don’t demand an immediate stop, but they are signaling that service is needed soon. Addressing them proactively can prevent future headaches:

1. Check Engine Light (Steady)

Icon:  Engine symbol (not flashing)

  • This could be something simple, like a loose gas cap, or something more involved, such as a faulty sensor or emissions issue. While it may not affect drivability right away, prolonged driving can increase emissions and lower fuel efficiency.

2. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Icon:  Horseshoe-shaped tire with an exclamation point

  • Indicates one or more tires are over- or under-inflated. Common in summer when heat expands air. May also indicate a slow leak or faulty sensor. Driving with incorrect tire pressure can lead to poor fuel economy and uneven wear.

3. Traction Control / ABS Light

Icon:  Skidding car symbol or ABS letters

  • This light may illuminate if a wheel speed sensor is dirty or failing, or if there’s an issue in the anti-lock braking system. While you can drive with it on, your traction control and ABS safety features may not function properly.

4. Maintenance Reminder Light

Icon:  Wrench or “Maintenance Due”

  • A built-in reminder based on mileage or time to schedule regular service. Typically prompts for oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations, and multi-point inspections.

🌞 Why Summer Heat Triggers Dashboard Warnings

Tennessee summers bring more than sunshine. Heat stress can trigger or worsen underlying issues in your vehicle:

  • Battery: High temperatures can cause battery fluid to evaporate and shorten lifespan.

  • Cooling System: Increased engine load can push weak components—radiators, hoses, thermostats—to the breaking point.

  • Tires: Warm air expands, which can throw off pressure readings and expose weak spots in older tires.
